David Gaines

Social Entrepreneur, Speaker, Author, and Visionary.

About Me.

I am the Chief Visionary for La Terza Artisan Coffee Roasterie. After working for years in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors, I felt pulled toward social enterprise and the way La Terza provided phenomenal coffee while positively impacting workers worldwide. I believe in the power of coffee to foster human connection, and know that coffee shops play an important role in the social health of our communities. My passion is to help coffee shops and cafes thrive so that they can empower everyone involved in the process: providing a living wage for farmers, owners, and baristas alike.

I see a new type of business model where we can not only better the lives of people we source from, but also the lives of our employees, customers, and even our competition.

I am currently the Board Chair of the local chapter of the Social Enterprise Alliance which has given me the opportunity to further build into Cincinnati’s growing community of social-impact businesses. Together, we are creatively challenging the traditional business status quo and incorporating life-bringing ideas into everyday business practices! And it doesn’t just stop with our work; it also continues as we engage with our purchases. Every dollar we spend is a vote for something. There’s a story behind every product we buy, and we should support businesses that have a positive impact on the world. As awareness grows among consumers, how do we do our part to buy better stories? This is the message I hope to spread in all my business endeavors.

My Upcoming Book.

All I really need to know, I learned in Kindergarten. In it's essence, social enterprise is simple: using the tools of business to treat others like you want to be treated.

In my new book, I outline the seven different groups of people with whom social impact businesses interact with:

  • supply chain

  • employees

  • customers

  • competitors

  • community

  • environment

  • self

In order for social impact businesses to succeed, leaders should make small steps in each of these categories, planting seeds of change as they grow their business. My book, The Seven Seeds of Social Enterprise, walks you through how to apply the Golden Rule to each area in order to continue to make an impact in the world through the power of business.

With over ten years of public speaking experience, I’m passionate about sharing this message of social enterprise with business executives, college students, entrepreneurs, and non-profit leaders.

If you’re interested in bringing me to your organization to inspire and equip your leaders, students, or staff in the area of social enterprise, feel free to contact me via the form below to discuss details. I look forward to hearing from you!
